Abstract

This article examines the application of the Tartily Banjary method in Qur'an learning, with a focus on social dynamics and local narratives in the city of Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan. The Tartily Banjary method, which is rapidly developing in the South Kalimantan region, is part of a locally-based Qur'an education tradition that emphasizes traditional tajwid and makharijul huruf pronunciation, supported by a system of memorization and text comprehension. This article is based on ethnographic research conducted at five Tahfiz Houses in Banjarmasin, Banjarbaru, and Banjar Regency from September to December 2023. These five Tahfiz Houses were selected because they use the Tartily Banjary method. The results show that Tartily Banjary is a Qur'an teaching method created by paying attention to local values that strengthen the cultural and religious identity of the Banjar community. This article offers an important perspective on the relevance of locally-based Islamic education in facing modernity, and how traditional methods can adapt to the challenges of the times without losing their cultural roots. Furthermore, the Tartily Banjary method also faces significant challenges related to changes in the learning styles of the younger generation, which are becoming more interactive and technology-based, as well as limited access to modern educational facilities. Social dynamics, including economic factors, urbanization, and diverse access to education, also influence the implementation of this method.
